Generations of Zirconia…What Every Clinician Needs To Know!

NOT ALL ZIRCONIAS ARE THE SAME!! Since the introduction of monolithic zirconia as a full-contour indirect restorative material in 2010, there have been numerous generations of this restorative material. Manufacturers and researchers are aiming to introduce a zirconia material with properties that can combine strength and translucency. This presentation will cover an in-depth overview of the different zirconia generations and what a clinician should understand about each generations’ mechanical and optical properties that will aid in the selection process when prescribing zirconia restorations. The most recent cementing protocols for monolithic zirconia restorations will also be discussed. Finally, there is a discussion of clinical-based evidence reported in the current literature on monolithic zirconia restorations and if an alternative laboratory survey method can provide useful information on zirconia’s current clinical status.

Innovative Indirect Resins: Resilient Ceramics with CAD/CAM Technology

The presentation will focus on resin-based CAD/CAM materials described as resilient ceramics. Material characteristics, physical properties, and clinical applications will be reviewed. Ongoing long-term clinical research outcomes will be presented as a means to appreciating how the material would complement a CAD/CAM dental practice.

The Paradox of Material Options: Lithium Silicate, Disilicate [When, Where and Why]

Under the best of circumstances, the transfer of information between the dentist and technician for the fabrication of restorations is difficult and challenging. Our educated patients and the advancement of materials have created a need for us to didactically move through the diagnostic process. Although most communication starts with the photographic ability the understanding of material choices including their optical and functional properties. This one-hour program will focus on the when, where, and why lithium based materials are so valuable in today's restorative process.

From Bis-Acryl to Milled PMMA, Transition to Excellence

The purpose of this presentation is to learn about the move towards milled provisional restorations and why they benefit the dentist, the patient, and the ceramist. The ability to mill homogenous PMMA to the exact margins of a preparation and its long-term benefits are of great use to the dentist in restoring patient dentition.

Speaker Information

MODERATOR: Robert C. Margeas, DDS

Dr. Margeas graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1986 and completed his AEGD residency the following year. He is currently an adjunct professor in the department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Iowa. He is board certified by the American Board of Operative Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry, a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Society for Dental Aesthetics, and International Team of Oral implantologists (ITI). He has written numerous articles on esthetic and implant dentistry, and lectures and presents hands-on courses nationally and internationally on those subjects. He is currently the Editor in Chief of Inside Dentistry, on the Editorial Board of Compendium, and is a contributing editor to Oral Health in Canada. His memberships include OKU Honor Dental Society, American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Margeas maintains a full-time private practice focusing on comprehensive restorative and implant dentistry in Des Moines, Iowa.


Dennis J. Fasbinder, DDS, ABGD

Dr. Fasbinder is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry.  He is board certified in General Dentistry by the American Board of General Dentistry.  He also maintains a part-time private practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Fasbinder directs the Computerized Dentistry (CompuDent) Unit at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, that is dedicated to research and education on CAD/CAM dental systems and ceramic materials.  The CompuDent Unit has been a leader in education and research with chairside CAD/CAM systems, digital impression systems, and ceramic restorations since 1993, resulting in numerous publications.  Dr. Fasbinder has delivered advanced education courses on ceramics and digital dentistry for over 20 years and is a frequent speaker on ceramic-based dentistry and digital dental systems at meetings and conferences in North America and international locations.


Peter Pizzi, MDT, CDT 

Mr. Peter Pizzi, is owner and manager of Pizzi Dental Studio Inc.  A board member of the ASMDT, Peter is also on faculty at New York University School of Dentistry in their Master Dental Technician program and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Inside Dental Technology.  Peter has lectured to doctors and technicians throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia on several different topics, including crown and bridge, ceramics, implantology, muscle function, color communication, digital photography and mandibular physiology. He also continually studies with some of the world’s top speakers and clinicians.  Mr. Pizzi is a member of the AAED, Fellow and Executive Board Member of the Northeastern 


Taiseer Sulaiman, DDS, PhD

Dr. Taiseer Sulaiman, is the director of the Advanced Operative Dentistry and Biomaterials Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he gained his clinical certificate in Operative Dentistry. He completed his PhD in Dental Materials from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterial Sciences from the University of Turku in Finland in collaboration with the Department of Operative Dentistry, University of North Carolina. Dr. Sulaiman is a clinician and a researcher hoping to bridge gaps between dental research and clinical application. Dr. Sulaiman’s research focus is on dental ceramics, adhesion, cements, color, and appearance in dentistry and biomimetics. He is a member of numerous academies, including the IADR/AADR, Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Society of Color and Appearance in Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. He has lectured on numerous national and international stages and serves as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed dental journals.
